Activity: The Battle

• Play opposites battle challenge
  • Two teams line up on opposite sides of the room.
  • Members of teams count off and number themselves. 
  • Youth Leader calls both teams #1s to the center to face off.
  • The first person to say the opposite of the word chosen by the Leader out loud gets one point for their team.
  • Play until no more words chosen or for 5-6 minutes
  • See sheet for opposites

Ask:

• We’ve been talking about Jesus, our hero.  Usually when there is a hero, there is also a villain.   Name several superheros and have students call out the matching villain.  Explain that today we will be talking about the enemy of God and therefore our enemy too.

• Ant Man – Yellow Jacket
  • Batman – Joker
  • Catwoman – Laurel Hedare
  • Green Lantern – Sinestro
  • Ironman – Obadiah Stane
  • Spiderman – Green Goblin, Venom
  • Wonder Woman – God of War/Ares
  • Thor – Loki
  • Supergirl – Lex Luthor

• Earlier we matched opposites.  Were the opposites equal to each other?
• Which of the words that we used describe God?  Who do you think the others describe?
• Which do you think describe Heaven?  Which do you think describe Hell?

Read Ephesians 6:10-12

• Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his great power. 11 Wear the full armor of God. Wear God’s armor so that you can fight against the devil’s evil tricks. 12 Our fight is not against people on earth. We are fighting against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world’s darkness. We are fighting against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly world.

Ask:

• What do you already know about satan?
• As answers come forth, write them down.

Say:

• Satan was created – God is the Creator!
  • Satan was a Cherubim – Ezekiel 28:2b-17
    • Human being, sing a funeral song for the king of Tyre. Say to him: ‘This is what the Lord God says: You were an example of what was perfect. You were full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You had wonderful life, like those in Eden, the garden of God. Every valuable gem was on you: ruby, topaz and emerald, yellow quartz, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and chrysolite. Your jewelry was made of gold. It was prepared on the day you were created. So I threw you down in disgrace from the mountain of God. You became too proud because of your beauty. You ruined your wisdom because of your greatness. I threw you down to the ground.
• Satan is fallen – Jesus is risen!
  • Author of Sin/Fell because of Pride – Isaiah 14:12-15
    • King of Babylon, morning star, you have fallen from heaven, even though you were as bright as the rising sun! In the past all the nations on earth bowed down before you. But now you have been cut down. You told yourself, “I will go up to heaven. I will put my throne above God’s stars. I will sit on the mountain of the gods. I will sit on the slopes of the sacred mountain. I will go up above the tops of the clouds. I will be like God Most High.” But you were brought down to the grave. You were brought down to the deep places where the dead are.
• Satan is a liar – Jesus is Truth!
  • Called Father of Lies– John 8:44
    • Your father is the devil. You belong to him and want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He was against the truth, for there is no truth in him. He is a liar, and he is like the lies he tells. He is the father of lies.
• Satan is a Life-taker – Jesus is the Life-Giver!
  • John 10:7,10
    • So Jesus said again, A thief comes to steal and kill and destroy. But I came to give life—life in all its fullness

Say:

• Jesus is God.  He is the Creator.  He has won the victory over death & sin; He is Truth & can be trusted. :  Jesus is the only Sovereign King!
• Then end by comparing the “lions”.   *Jesus described as the “Lion of Judah” (Rev. 5:5); the devil is just a roaring lion in 1 Peter 5:8.
  • Rev. 5:5 – But one of the elders said to me, “Do not cry! The Lion[a] from the tribe of Judah has won the victory. He is David’s descendant. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
  • 1 Peter 5:8 – Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy. And he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat.

• So to sum up Ephesians 6:10-12: “Be aware…but don’t despair!”
